OFFERED Since its inception, Dr. Jason Hui, his associates, and his staff have striven to deliver only the best to their patients in terms of preventative dentistry and cosmetic treatment for the Surrey community. Dr. Jason Hui, for example, is experienced and knowledgeable about bonding and porcelain crown and bridges, full gold crowns, white onlays or inlays, and bleaching; he has even done some innovative work in the employment of direct bonding techniques using the most current white filling materials (Please see Gallery). Composite Materials vis-a-vis Mercury/Amalgam FillingsThe use of mercury in silver-coloured amalgam fillings (which contain silver, mercury, copper, and tin) is highly controversial. We take our patients' health seriously, so we use state of the art white composite resins currently available on the market. They are not only more attractive and natural-looking but also much safer. Since composites have been in use for over thirty years, dental professionals consider these the safest alternative. We recommend this conservative method of treatment because it is natural-looking, relatively inexpensive, easily repaired (if at all necessary), fast and effective, and frequently covered by insurance companies. Clearly, we aim not only to meet but also surpass our patients' health, economic, and aesthetic needs. Tooth Whitening & BleachingTo whiten teeth, Dr. Jason Hui began employing bleaching systems when they first emerged in the early 1990s and, along with his associates, continues to do so. One system, "in-office bleaching," must be applied in the office during which time a bleaching agent is placed over the patient's teeth: this method is for more aggressive stains and the results are immediate, although a second visit is sometimes required. The other system, "tray bleaching," takes about seven to ten days, and obliges patients to take home a tray, which is made from an impression of the patients' teeth. Bleaching agents are placed in the custom-fit tray: when his clients wear this tray for a set number of hours a day, results are usually observable within a few days. The kind and intensity of stains often determine what system is best used. However, we find that the take home bleaching system always gives a better result, and more cost effective.Bleaching systems effectively remove stains that have deepened over time with such habits as drinking coffee or wine, and smoking. Even the most pernicious stains – like those left by tetracycline consumption – may now be lightened with such systems. Most cases show that teeth will become at least two shades brighter after having completed the process, unless you have fillings or crowns on your front teeth. Although the results are permanent, with habits like the consumption of coffee, a patient's teeth may require a touch up. The process of whitening teeth has been around for close to one hundred years, although the bleaching process is relatively new – it is safe when monitored by your dentist. It is safe almost everyone of any age. Aside from some temporary sensitivity to cold after the bleaching, there are no long-term harmful effects to your teeth or your gums. If sensitivity persists, however, the patient is advised to contact Dr. Jason Hui or one of his colleagues. Dr. Jason Hui and his associates are pleased to consult with his patients from Surrey, the Great Vancouver area and elsewhere about which method is preferable. Dental SealantsThe plastic material that covers and protects one's teeth, dental sealants are especially used for the back molars and pre-molars, to keep out the germs that cause tooth decay. Sealants usually come in liquid form and harden over the tooth surfaces to prevent tooth decay. After the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and dried, and then rinsed and dried a second time, the sealant is applied. It dries within seconds. Although regular brushing and flossing is encouraged in addition to the use of fluoride toothpaste, sealants are unquestionably the most effective method of preventing tooth decay. Children are advised to get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as they come in; even full adults, however, are strongly encouraged to get sealants, especially for those teeth that worn and sensitive. Porcelain Crowns The white enamel or natural covering that covers your teeth may become worn, cracked or damaged with time. Dr. Hui and his associates are pleased to restore the damage done to their patients' teeth by using all-porcelain crowns, which have a natural translucency virtually indistinguishable from white enamel. To do so, the tooth is reduced and shaped; an impression of the patient's teeth and gums is taken and sent to our dental laboratory for the fabrication of the porcelain crown; and, when it is ready, it is placed on, adjusted to, and cemented on your tooth. BondingComposite bonding, a procedure that takes about thirty minutes to an hour, is used to repair teeth that have been chipped, cracked, or discoloured. Bonding is also used as a way of replacing silver amalgam (mercury) fillings and to fill in the gaps between teeth (Please see Gallery). After selecting a shade of composite bonding material that closely matches the patients' tooth, Dr. Hui slightly roughens the surface of the tooth and applies a liquid that helps the bonding material stick to the tooth. Once the resin is applied and smoothed into the appropriate shape, it is hardened with a high intensity light and polished until the tooth resembles the others. Sleep ApneaSleep apnea is a condition that causes people to stop breathing while they are sleeping, for up to ten seconds at a time. It sounds to others as if the person were snoring, but it is in fact a health issue that may lead to further serious complications if not corrected. The muscles in the tongue and throat relax, the tongue drops back into the airway, and the airway is thus narrowed. The air that travels through moves more quickly and causes a vibration that produces the sound we refer to as snoring. The danger involves a reduction of oxygen to the blood and brain. The brain responds by signaling to the airway to unblock itself by tightening up, which causes the person in turn to snort abruptly. The cycle repeats itself throughout an evening's sleep and causing the person to feel exhausted the next morning by the lack off a good night's rest. This conditions other side effects include: moodiness, headaches, daytime fatigue, and the inability to concentrate well. Although a patient can take other measures to assist himself by eliminating nasal congestion, refraining from eating large meals before bedtime, avoiding caffeine, alcohol, sleeping pills, nicotine and strenuous exercise before bedtime, the condition needs to be diagnosed by a doctor and treated accordingly. Dr. Hui may help by employing a custom-fit dental appliance that prevents the jaw from slipping back and opening up the airways during sleep – it reduces snoring and fosters a good night's rest. Orthodontic DentistryDr. Jason Hui specifically enjoys performing orthodontic dentistry, especially for those cases that involve crowding or malalignment, which cannot be repaired with bonding or crowns or bridges alone. Dr. Jason Hui also offer clear ceramic braces called INVISALIGN which are not very noticeable by others. Please consult us to see if you are a good candidate for INVISALIGN.![]() Straighten teeth invisibly with Invisalign's removable aligners. Computerized AnaestheticsDr. Hui and his colleagues promote the use of the computerized local anaesthetic delivery system, better known as the "WAND" or "compudent" (the latest version in the market). They prefer this system because there is no collateral numbness in the face, little if any pain, and very little anaesthetic employed. Many patients who are afraid of dental needles loved this so much. New patients are always welcome in our Surrey family dental office.Oral Cancer ScreeningThe VELscope is the most powerful tool available for assisting in the discovery of oral abnormalities. The VELscope's distinctive blue-spectrum light causes the soft tissues of the mouth to naturally fluoresce. Healthy tissues fluoresce in distinctive patterns — patterns that are visibly disrupted by trauma or disease. Using the VELscope, a wide variety of oral abnormalities (oral cancer) can be discovered — often before they're visible to the unassisted eye.
